The Paperwork comprises several unusually elongated sheets of paper. The forms are intended especially for people Vacating to Armigette City to pursue a Vocation. You mark the name of your home Towne, Veriant, among a list of mostly-unfamiliar Townes that supposedly exist in the region. You mark your Vocation, Dressmaker, among the shockingly huge grid of possibilities. Many of them were in your Catalogue collection, but there are plenty that you have never read about. Decoupeur… Algorithmist… Conlanger… Speculative Onomast…
You zero in on the appropriate section and, situated between Dollmaker and Drummer, you find yourself: Dressmaker. You circle it. It somehow, at last, feels official. That title has always been something that existed in your Future, something to reach toward. This is the first time you have tried it on in the Present, and believed it.
When the Paperwork is done, a Lesser Bureaucrat reviews it, helps you tie it up with an official-looking bit of Twine, slides it into an Envelope, checks in briefly with the lead Bureaucrat, escorts you on your way through the Chamber to the Door at the back, and wishes you success on the rest of your Journey.
